With more than 90 years of history, this Spanish company specializes in the manufacture and commercialization of canned vegetables and meat, fusing tradition, experience and artisanal wisdom with the latest technological processes, offering natural products of excellent quality.
In addition to being one of the largest agri-food groups in the country, Apis Group has a great differential advantage: it has its own production.
It has no intermediaries, given that the agri-food industry is made up of more than 2,500 cooperative members from Extremadura.
A family of farmers who know and take care of the field, managing resources and processes in a sustainable way. As they are own crops, Apis is present from sowing to final packaging, thus controlling the total traceability of the product.
Apis offers natural, healthy, exquisite and functional foods, with low fat content and high nutritional value, ensuring all the guarantees of quality and food safety, where every detail is taken care of. A commitment to excellence with the environment, society, its clients and its consumers.
The origins of the company date back to the beginning of the 20th century when the company was established in 1927, the result of the initiative of a group of farmers from Mérida. It was Alfonso XIII who inaugurated the Mérida plant in 1929, which was then called the Mérida Regional Slaughterhouse. Its main activity was focused on the manufacture and marketing of meat products and derivatives.
In the 1940s, the entity had more than 500 workers. Considered then, as the largest company in Extremadura and the first firm in the country to manufacture sausages and hamburgers, at this time the entity was already making ready-made dishes (Extremadura stew, fabada, tripe, …) and Apis pate, recognized for its extraordinary flavor, which at that time was known as “Foie gras”.
In the mid-1950s, in 1956, with a new company name (IFESA), Apis expanded its portfolio with Lean Pork, a product that continues to be a market leader today, and an extraordinary range of meat products.
Fruco was born in 1959, a pioneer brand in Spain in the manufacture of industrial juices.
In the 1970s, Apis and Fruco independently competed in the tomato market. At that time, Apis was managed by CARCESA, while Fruco was managed by CONSIBER.
In the 1980s, Fruco was absorbed by CARCESA, and both Apis and Fruco changed their brand image following the latest trends of the moment, with the introduction of new technologies for aseptic brick packaging. Both brands were pioneers in the packaging of juice and tomato in this practical container.
Carnes y Vegetales SL (Apis Group), the Extremadura agri-food company created in 2011, the successor to the extinct Carcesa, currently markets food products under the APIS and FRUCO brands.
Over the years, the company has been part of important multinationals, such as Kraft Foods, Nabisco or United Biscuit. This trajectory has given him the great know-how he currently possesses, as well as the highest standards of quality and service.
The agri-food industry has two manufacturing complexes located in the towns of Mérida and Montijo.
The company proudly flags that Apis is made up of farmers, who grow tomatoes that grow in the sun, under unbeatable weather and soil conditions, in a land rich in nutrients, irrigated with the best water, that of the Guadiana. A formula that makes possible a very high quality tomato, unique for its flavor, color and texture. The good tomato from the Guadiana Valley.
Tomatoes are harvested and processed in a very short time, six hours, which allows maintaining and preserving all their natural, healthy and organoleptic characteristics.
At the Montijo factory, whose facilities cover more than 130,000 m2 and a tradition in tomato processing since 1951, one million kilos of natural tomatoes are produced per day during the harvest season, from July to September. Producing more than 45 million kilos per season, in a sustainable way and respecting the environment.
In Mérida, Apis owns one of the most innovative, modern and largest canned meat factories in Europe. Inaugurated in 2007, these facilities have a production capacity of more than 7 million kg. year.
The Extremaduran company continues to bet on R + D + i, with the aim of developing innovative products that can adapt to the needs of the market, without losing their artisan origin, guaranteeing the highest quality and the best flavor, which has allowed it to obtain social and business recognition, throughout its entire career.
